My daughter, Tara, and writer of this blog, threw down the gauntlet and asked me to be her first guest blogger. She asked me to write about her father’s and my first experience at Dragon Con last year. I accepted the challenge. I must admit, for the past 10 years, I was a little bitter over Dragon Con – or should I say at least when it was held. It is always on Labor Day weekend – my birthday weekend. I felt like I had lost my daughter and son-in-law to this thing called Dragon Con. Happy Birthday ME! Happily holding the grandbaby. To us, it looked like a huge “geek convention” where people dressed up in costumes like a super hero or science fiction character and walked around for days playing dress up. That’s fine, and even though they invited us several times to partake in this activity, we really didn’t feel it was our cup of tea . Who wants to drag their parents around, especially when it’s their big vacation of the year and all their friends join them and share one big hotel room together?” I am not saying David and I are not cool , because we are, but we just felt like this event was for them. After all, this was their tenth anniversary of attending Dragon Con as a group. Last year, Tara and her husband, Ryan, had their first baby, our grandson Harrison. They dangled the “baby carrot” in front of our faces – “If you want to see your grandson and spend your birthday with him then you have to meet us in Atlanta for Dragon Con.” I should add – Tara, Ryan, and Harrison live in Chicago and we live in Florida, so she knew darn well we would drive anywhere and do anything to see that precious baby! Once Tara had us on the “Dragon Con hook” she added another thought: we might like to dress up in costumes from Harry Potter. We thought perhaps we could just stay in the hotel room with Harrison, but Tara was too clever – she made Harrison part of her Harry Potter costume. Curses! Foiled again! Secretly, my husband and I thought we would actually enjoy the Dragon Con experience because my husband is an amazing costume designer and I am the “Idea Girl” and we both love to dress up in costumes for Halloween or in stage shows. We watched every Harry Potter movie and studied all of the characters until we knew exactly who we would be and, even more fun, we knew it would throw a curve ball into what Tara and Ryan expected from us. We worked for weeks to completely design authentic costumes and mannerisms of the Malfoys. Not Mr. and Mrs. as I am sure everyone expected, but father and son! Draco and Lucius Malfoy When we got to Dragon Con and put on our costumes and went downstairs to be with all the other costumed characters, we were awe struck. This event has the most amazing costumes – from all genres of entertainment. There were thousands of costumed characters walking around, posing for photos and admiring each other’s hard work and creativity. The greatest compliment we got on our costumes came from our son-in-law when he first saw us in our costumes and said, “Get ready, they are going to start taking photos of you two before you can barely get off the elevator.” And it was true! How fun! We felt like super stars! Most of the “Dragon Conners” were probably between the ages of twenty to forty, but we did see some that were older than us. I think the whole event isn’t about your age, but more about the stamina it takes to walk around for hours and hours at a time. Many people were in costumes that were impossible to sit in…or drink in…or eat in…or… It truly was an amazing experience to be at an event of such great magnitude with so many diverse and mega-talented artists and designers. As our big day as the Malfoys and our first Dragon Con experience came to a close, we sat outside in the very hot and humid air waiting for our taxi to take us back to our hotel. We started reflecting on our day and all the incredible costumes we saw. As we sat there sweating to death in our wigs and cloaks, a woman passed by that was wearing nothing but body paint from the waist up and frankly, I don’t remember what she was wearing from the waist down. I turned to my husband and said, “I don’t know who she is supposed to be, but I think I am going to be her character if I ever do this again!” From Sincere Mommy: A special thank you to my Mom for being my first Special Guest writer!
